Cousins Weekend!

A group photo with 30 people, 3 different generations, in front of a camper

The first leg of our 4th of July trip, the annual Polk Cousin's weekend. Every year a bunch of my mom's side of the family gets together to meet at a lake house in Neshkoro, WI and spend the weekend swimming, flea marketing, playing cards and just hanging out. This was Suveera's first and she got to meet a whole bunch of family, including her uncle. It was really great to see her interact with so many people. It's important to me that she knows all of these people and has a sense of family from my side since she'll never know my mom or dad directly.

We met my brother Hunter about half way up to the cabin, stopping at my parents' gravesite so that was nice. He got to meet her before everyone else clambered on. I also won $100 from a pull tab at the restaurant we stopped at for lunch, so I'll take that as my mom and dad showing their love as well.

The rest of Friday night was a whirlwind of meeting people and card games, the usual fun times. The big event is always Saturday where we head to the Princeton Flea Market, or the Crap Fair as we like to call it. 6 years ago or so we started a tradition where we try to find the weirdest, most interesting thing we can with a set spending limit. This year it was $7. it was slim pickings outside of our usual cheese curds, beef sticks, jerky, and homemade caramels, but we did find a small mesh bag with the head and limbs of a monkey, so now Suveera has "baby's first dice bag." My cousin's son was the vote winner this year with a Peanut M&M in a recliner that was also an M&M dispenser. I can't speak to how the sample M&Ms he was handing out beforehand may have affected the votes.

Next up it was time to swim. It something I've been looking forward to with Suveera since basically she was born. I learned to swim at a young age and I couldn’t wait to introduce her to the water.

It was chillier than we expected, so I was afraid when we dipped her in she’d immediately pull back, but that was not that case at all. In fact, she loved it. As I held her and moved her in the water she kicked along like a natural.

I saw this float on TikTok and had to get it for her so she’d feel safe in the water. She thought it was ok.

She only wanted to be in the float for a little bit, but was totally fine being in the water. I can’t wait until we can get her to a pool or other place with cleaner water where we can put her head under.

She was thrilled as you can see.

After I got her out and Shaila went to dry her off I went deeper to play with my cousins. And then I promptly lost my wedding ring. My sunglasses got knocked/broken off my head and as I felt around for them, I felt my ring slip off. I dove for it for about 20 min with no luck. It’s a small lake, but there’s a lot of muck where I was. It sucks, because it had gold from my mother’s wedding ring in it. If the fates allow it’ll show up on the beach at some point, but there’s not much I can do till then.

The rest of the weekend was our usual Euchre games and a boat ride to cap off the evening. It was a great weekend.

After we left Sunday it was home then off Cincinnati to Shaila’s parents’ place. Two nights there and then it was a drive down to Sevierville, TN, where I’m finishing this post up right now.
